The wooden parts had already been removed so I could take off the yucky, damaged leather.
There were three pieces: sofa, chair, ottoman, and each one had four turned wooden feet that attached through a molded wooden frame. The wood on this sofa was sort of stained blue-brown (which is like the color of coffee or chocolate) and had some kind of light finish over that. So I had to sand that down so it could receive a coat of paint, and in this case I chose a dark silver metallic color which is sometimes called "gunmetal grey."
I used oil-based spray paint. To finish it I first got black oil-based paint and made it very thin with thinner. Then I brushed it over all the painted surfaces, let it settle in the low places to create an aged look, and then briefly wiped off the high surfaces to let them shine through.
Next time I'll talk about how to do upholstery tacks.
